Cycle time trends

The Cycle time trends graph helps you find out how the average time to complete tasks has changed from period to period.

How to read the Cycle time trends graph?

The X-axis shows the periods of work.

The Y-axis shows the average time to complete tasks.

Accordingly, the dots on the graph represent the average time taken to complete tasks during certain periods.

  • If the graph line is going up, it is a signal that you are taking longer to complete tasks (perhaps the tasks have changed, or perhaps productivity has dropped).

  • If the line of the graph is flat, it means that your work is quite stable and predictable.

  • If the line is going down, you are doing tasks faster.

A dotted line running through the whole graph indicates one of the functions: average, median or percentile.

How to adjust the display of data on the graph?

To get the information you want from the graph, apply the filters on the right-hand side of the screen:

Group by – here you select for which period the average time to complete tasks will be counted: 6 months, 3 months, 1 month or 1 week.

Period – which period the data will be shown on the graph as a whole.

Path beginning – here you select one or more columns and lanes, when you enter them, the cards are considered as taken into work. If you select more than one entry column, the first time the cards hit one of them will be counted.

Path ending – here you select one or more columns and lanes, on hitting which the cards are considered completed. If you select more than one entry column, the time of the last hit on any of them will be counted.

Function – here you select which function the graph will be plotted against: average, median or percentile.

Separate by – here you can divide the calculation of the average task time depending on lane, card type, size, order, responsible members and custom fields, except for the fields of "Multiselect" and "Multiline string" types.

Card types and Tags – you can only display cards of certain types and/or cards with certain tags on the chart.

Only ASAP cards – you can separately display the time for urgent tasks.

How to work with a graph?

For example, we want to see the statistics for the tasks on the developers board.

  1. We select a range of columns and lanes.

  2. Next, the system prompts to select a period. In our example, we have taken all the cards for the year (January 2022 to January 2023).

  3. Next we select grouping by period. This allows you to divide the date range selected above by a specified number of time periods. We selected a period of 1 month.

Note that the period chosen will depend on how quickly the team manages to close 85% of the tasks. For example, if it is 7 days, then a period of 1 week should not be chosen, otherwise the schedule will be subject to fluctuations. It is better to group the dates into 1 or 3 months, so that there are no large errors.

  4. Now we can look at the dynamics of task time over the year, and compare the figures for each type of tasks.

We can see that the average task time is gradually decreasing over the year (dotted line), but there are clear problem periods when tasks are much slower than usual.
